ABSTRACT

As far as we can ascertain in the literature, this is the first time cryogenic procedure has been applied to the difficult problem of obliterating or artificially regressing corneal blood vesselsUtilizing-50 degree celsius we froze a series of 25 cases of vascularized corneas and have carefully and systematically observed clinically the obliteration and complete regression of the blood vessels by the aid of biomicroscope, operating microscope and with the help of intravenous flourescein. Diagrams of the individual vessels were recorded and photographs of various stages of regression were takenHistopathological examinations of the frozen corneal tissues were made. Photomicrographs of the sections showed the death, disintegration, disapperance of the endotholial cells of the blood vesel with extravasation, some inflammatory reaction and complete disappearance of the vessels. The changes in the non-vascular, cellular and non-cellular structures have been shown. Several cases of frozen vascularized cornea have been subjected to keratoplasty after 4 to 5 months with more favorable results than if the corneal freezing had not been done. (Summary)

ABSTRACT

The study described the use of human placenta as a dialyzing medium. This is a preliminary reportThe subject was a dog legated to produced uremia. A freshly delivered placenta was obtained. The two arteries and the vein of the umbilical cord were cannulated separately using glass cannules. The femoral vessels of the dog were exposed and cannulated on both sides. The cannulated vessels of the dog and the placent were connected to establish a closed circulation, such that the dogs blood flowed from the femoral arteries to the umbilical arteries through the placenta to the umbilical vein, then back to the femoral vein of the dog and its general circulationThe establishment of circulation through the placenta was satisfactory. The NPN and creatinine levels were determined and recorded.(Author)

ABSTRACT

In this study, the previous history of family planning and prior usage of contraceptive methods are analyzed, in a sample of 175 women who voluntarily opted for surgical sterilization as a permanent method of fertility regulation, in the Panamanian Social Security System. A questionnaire was applied during the second trimester of pregnancy, by which information would be gathered in regard to knowledge, usage and adverse effects of the contraceptive methods used prior to the intervention. Results showed that 99% of the sample had heard, on some occasion about oral contraceptives (OC) and, in lesser proportion to intrauterine devices (IUD), barrier methods and hormonal inyectables. The first contraceptive method used, and the one of longest usage, was the combined OC, of which 43% begun between 17 and 25 years of age. In contrast, 7.4% initiated contraception with IUD, from the age of 26 years. The health personnel constituted the major source of recommendation for contraceptive usage and, despite the fact that 37% of the sample did not use contraception prior to the last pregnancy, over half of the subjects responded that combined OC were considered as the most secure method
